A Tallahassee Teenager's Complete Guide to Getting a Florida Learner's Permit

Are you a Tallahassee teen who is ready to start driving? Or a parent wondering how to help your teen get their Florida learner's permit? Look no further! Burgess Driving School is here to guide you through every step of the process, right here in Leon County. Our driving school is built by parents for parents, so let us help you!

What is a Florida Learner's Permit?

A learner's permit, also known as a learner's license, is the first step towards becoming a licensed driver in Florida. It allows teens to practice driving under supervision, preparing them for the responsibilities of full driving privileges.

Steps to Get Your Florida Learner's Permit in Tallahassee

  1. Meet the Age Requirement - You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner's permit in Florida.

  2. Complete the TLSAE Course - Before applying for your permit, new teen drivers need to complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course, also known as the 4-hour drug and alcohol course. Good news! Burgess Driving School offers this course online - along with special discounts that can make the cost of the course free.

  3. Study for the Class E Knowledge Exam - The next step is passing the Class E knowledge exam, which tests a new driver's understanding of road rules and signs. At Burgess Driving School, we also offer online access to both a study guide and the official exam, allowing teen drivers to take complete all state-required coursework from the comfort of home.

  4. Pass the Exam - With our study materials and practice tests, you'll be well-prepared to ace the exam. Remember, you need to score at least 80% to pass.

  5. Visit the DMV - Once you've completed the TLSAE course and passed the knowledge exam, visit your local Tallahassee DMV office. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and residential address. You'll also need to pass a vision test.

What's Next? Behind-the-Wheel Training

Congratulations! You've got your learner's permit. Now it's time to gain real driving experience. This is where Burgess Driving School truly shines. Our behind-the-wheel lessons are custom-tailored for each student, and for Tallahassee's unique driving conditions. From navigating the tricky roundabouts in Killearn or near Golden Eagle, to the busier streets of Thomasville Road, Tennessee Street, or downtown traffic, to handling the pedestrian-heavy intersections near FSU and FAMU, our lessons prepare our students to become confident, safe drivers.

Remember, Florida law requires you to hold your learner's permit for at least 12 months and complete 50 hours of driving practice (including 10 hours at night) before you can apply for your actual driver license. Our lessons count towards these hours and provide structured, professional instruction to complement your practice with parents.

We offer lessons in discounted packages to help save money. Learn more about our low cost behind-the-wheel driving lesson packages.

Best of all, our lessons help lower anxiety for parents AND teenagers. All of our students make rapid improvements in just a handful of lessons, making the remaining 40+ hours of parent-teen driving instruction much more enjoyable for everyone.
