Mastering the Road: An overview of what you'll learn during behind the wheel training
Learning to drive is a journey that involves more than just understanding the rules of the road. At Burgess Driving School, we break down this journey into four essential phases to ensure that new drivers are confident and competent behind the wheel.
Every time a new student signs up for driving lessons in Tallahassee, our Burgess Driving School instructor will begin a skill assessment to help design a customized lesson plan for the student. The instructor will want to know how comfortable the student is in each of the four phases of learning to drive. Let's dive into these phases, each designed to build on the previous one to help the student develop safe driving skills.
Phase 1: Basic Car Control
The first step in learning to drive is mastering basic car control. This includes familiarizing the student with the functions and proper setup of the controls of a modern car. Students learn how to smoothly start and stop, control speed, execute slow-speed turns, manage faster turns, and maintain lane discipline. This phase also covers essential skills such as lane changing, parking, and backing up. Mastery of these basics provides the foundation for safe driving. At Burgess Driving School, one of our favorite ways to teach these maneuvers is to set up orange traffic cones in a large, empty parking lot, such as the Donald Tucker Civic Center or the Governor's Square Mall.
There, students can practice a wide range of maneuvers in an actual car, but under simulated conditions that help alleviate the stress of trying to learn on a busier road.
Phase 2: Low-Density Driving
Once basic car control is established, the next phase involves driving in low-density environments. These include residential neighborhoods where the traffic is minimal, and the speed limits are lower. This phase allows new drivers to practice their skills under a much broader range of conditions, in a more realistic but still controlled environment. The experience helps build confidence and reinforces the importance of the car control skils they learned in Phase 1.
Phase 3: City Driving
In Phase 3, students transition to faster and busier city streets. This phase introduces them to more complex driving scenarios, such as navigating through traffic, understanding traffic signals, and handling the challenges of urban driving. Here, they learn to manage higher speeds, interact with other vehicles and pedestrians, change lanes in heavy traffic, and develop situational awareness critical for city driving.
Phase 4: Highway and Rural Driving
The final phase focuses on rural and interstate highway driving. This includes mastering the art of merging onto highways, maintaining highway speeds, and understanding the nuances of rural driving, such as dealing with varying road conditions and limited visibility. This phase ensures that new drivers are prepared for all types of driving environments, making them well-rounded and versatile drivers.
